(Washington, July 1) – Ranking Member Edward J. Markey (D-Mass.), today released the following statement after Republicans voted to pass H.R. 1, Donald Trump’s so-called “Big Beautiful Bill.” The bill now heads to the House of Representatives for consideration.

“Make no mistake: Trump’s Big Ugly Bill is a direct attack on America’s backbone, small businesses. This bill will raise health care, energy, and food costs for small business owners, their employees, and their families at a time when they’re already bearing the burden of President Trump’s reckless trade war.

“Republicans claim this bill will be a boon for small businesses but it’s actually a Big Billionaire Boondoggle, using Main Street as a Trojan horse to sneak through massive tax cuts for the wealthy and big corporations. As this Big Ugly Bill heads to the House of Representatives, we all need to continue to raise our voices even louder to stop this small business sell-out and prevent Trump and Republicans from turning Main Street into Pain Street.”

On June 26, Ranking Member Markey, Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.), and Finance Committee Ranking Member Ron Wyden (D-Ore.) wrote to Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-S.D.), and Finance Committee Chair Mike Crapo (R-Idaho) with concerns that the proposed cuts in the Republican budget reconciliation bill to Medicaid and the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), and allowing the enhanced Affordable Care Act (ACA) premium tax credits to expire for 3 million small businesses, including more than 34,000 Massachusetts small businesses, would be a disaster for families and small businesses across the country.
