In today's economic climate, starting a new business can be tough, and trying to expand an existing business can be even tougher, but trying to do either as a woman is nearly asking the impossible.

That was the message a handful of state officials, scholars and business women delivered to Sen. John Kerry Wednesday as part of a roundtable discussion called "Women in Business: Leveling the Playing Field'' held at Framingham State College.

"Women who seek to start and grow a business face funding hurdles that are higher than men,'' Kerry said. "This is a big deal in terms of how effective we are in terms of access to capital.''

The impact of those hurdles on the economy, he said, are not trivial.
