Tweed credits local politicians who never gave up on the mill for the progress it has made. Debris from the fire has almost been completely cleared, he said, and reconstruction is set to begin in the fall.

"The lieutenant governor and governor really stepped up and took action,'' Tweed said. ``(Sen.) John Kerry came here on a Sunday and listened to everyone. People never gave up on us.''
Moore said the fire hurt the local economy.

"We've learned from that experience,'' he said. ``Neighboring businesses lost customers because of the Bernat Mill fire. They were financially impacted even though they were not physically effected.''
