WASHINGTON – Today Sen. John Kerry (D-Mass.) announced his support for a measure to halt the Department of Transportation’s plans to implement a rule that could hurt small independent truck operators. Kerry is cosponsoring an amendment by Sen. Byron Dorgan (D-N.D.) to the transportation appropriations bill that will prevent the agency from using any funds to establish a cross-border pilot program that would allow Mexican trucks to operate beyond the designated commercial zone in the United States.
“The vast majority of truckers in America are mobile small business owners. It’s critical that we take a further look at the economic hardship small independent truckers will face if the playing field changes,” said Kerry, Chairman of the Committee on Small Business and Entrepreneurship. “The Bush Administration’s program undermines American workers and small business owners and this amendment puts their interests first.”
