U.S. Sen. David Vitter (R-La.), Chairman of the Senate Committee on Small Business and Entrepreneurship, sent a letter to Tom Perez, Secretary of the Department of Labor (DOL), urging Perez to reconsider his decision to not extend a public comment period for the DOL’s Notice of Proposed Rulemaking on overtime pay.

“The Obama Administration’s proposed rule would force small businesses to cut hours and benefits for their employees and eliminate thousands of jobs,” said Vitter. “Before the DOL moves forward with any change to overtime pay rules, American small businesses – who have limited resources as is – deserve enough time to thoroughly review and examine how this proposed rule would impact their ability to operate effectively.”

In July, the DOL announced a proposed rule that would substantially increase the number of workers who qualify for overtime pay, including certain workers who make over $100,000 a year. As SBC Chairman, Vitter urged DOL Secretary Perez to extend the public comment period in order to allow small businesses to thoroughly examine and comment on the proposed rule.
